Garfield Historic District In Phoenix, Arizona

What is now known as the Garfield Historic District was an agricultural tract of land in the 1800’s. Development started in 1883, and continued steadily until 1955. In 20th century, Garfield was a thriving community within the Phoenix city limits, even seeing more growth during the Great Depression than other Phoenix neighborhoods. It served as an example of a Streetcar subdivision because its residential development was directly related to a streetcar line that ran through the neighborhood.

After many years of neglect, the homes in this historic district are enjoying a revival. As more people invest in this quaint neighborhood, many are honoring and restoring the historic details that give Garfield its unique charm.

In 2004, a local artist opened a restaurant on the corner of 10th and Roosevelt Street. The Welcome Diner is an homage to Phoenix’s streetcar history that serves up delicious scratch-cooked meals. Needing more space, in 2017, they moved a few blocks away to Pierce & 10th. Across the street is Pueblo, Downtown Phoenix’s best plant shop since 2015. It's like a mini jungle in the middle of the desert! These are just a couple of the walkable gems that you can find in this area.

The boundaries of Garfield Historic District range about one square mile from 7th Street to 16th Street and Van Buren to Roosevelt Street – including both Garfield and North Garfield districts which were placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2010.

In the 1930’s, the architecture of homes in the district ranged from Early Ranch to Southwest Style, Spanish Colonial and Tudor Revival. Today, the area includes the largest concentration of English “Pyramid” Cottages in all of Phoenix. And out of the 769 homes located in the district, the average price is just $269,000, making this the most affordable historic district in the city.
