4 Awesome Day Trip Destinations to Get You Out of the Valley

Phoenix is a great place to call home, but sometimes you just need to get out and explore beyond the city limits. Luckily, Arizona is packed with incredible day trip destinations that are just a short drive away. Whether you're into nature, history, or just a little bit of adventure, there’s something for everyone within a couple of hours of the Valley. From scenic hikes to charming small towns, here are four of the best day trips you can take from Phoenix that are guaranteed to shake up your weekend plans.

Sedona

Sedona is a must-see, and it’s only about two hours north of Phoenix. Known for its stunning red rock formations and vibrant arts scene, it’s the perfect spot if you’re looking to get outside and connect with nature, but also want to explore a town with a lot of character. The drive itself is beautiful, with dramatic shifts in scenery as you leave the desert behind and climb into the high desert. Once you arrive, you’ll have endless options for how to spend your day.

If hiking is your thing, you can’t go wrong with the Cathedral Rock or Devil’s Bridge trails, both offering jaw-dropping views. For something less strenuous, a visit to Bell Rock or a stroll along Oak Creek might be more your speed. And after you’ve soaked in the natural beauty, Sedona’s artsy vibes come alive in its many galleries and shops. The Tlaquepaque Arts and Crafts Village is a great place to browse local art and maybe grab a bite to eat. With so much to offer, Sedona really makes you feel like you’ve entered another world, yet it's still so close to Phoenix.

Jerome

If you’re up for something a bit more quirky and historical, head to Jerome, about an hour and a half from Phoenix. This once-booming mining town has been transformed into a quirky artist’s haven perched on the side of a mountain. Jerome’s narrow, winding streets and hillside homes give it a character that’s completely unique, and there’s something a little magical about the way the town clings to the mountainside. It’s like a ghost town that decided to reinvent itself with a lot of personality.

Strolling through the town, you’ll find an eclectic mix of galleries, antique shops, and little restaurants. The Jerome Historical Society Mine Museum offers a super interesting look at the town’s mining past, while the Douglas Mansion provides some incredible views of the Verde Valley. You’ll also want to check out the Jerome State Historic Park for a deeper dive into its colorful history. Jerome has its share of ghost stories, so if you’re into the paranormal, there are even ghost tours you can take at night. This funky town might be small, but it’s packed with things to see and do, and it’s a perfect little escape from the Valley.

Payson

For a change of pace and some cooler temperatures, Payson is a fantastic option for a day trip, sitting just under 90 minutes from Phoenix. Known for its scenic beauty and proximity to the Mogollon Rim, it’s a great spot if you’re looking to escape the heat and enjoy some outdoor activities. The drive to Payson takes you through some pretty amazing landscapes, and by the time you arrive, you’ll feel like you’ve been transported to another climate entirely — cooler, greener, and perfect for a day spent outside.

One of the highlights of Payson is Tonto Natural Bridge State Park, home to one of the largest natural travertine bridges in the world. It’s a beautiful spot to hike, take pictures, or just enjoy the peace and quiet of nature. If you're into fishing or just lounging by the water, Green Valley Park is a great place to relax. Payson also has a rich history with ties to the Old West, and you can explore that at the Rim Country Museum. Whether you're into hiking, history, or just enjoying some fresh mountain air, Payson offers a refreshing break from the desert heat.

Superstition Mountains and Goldfield Ghost Town

For those who don’t want to venture too far from Phoenix but still crave a little adventure, the Superstition Mountains and nearby Goldfield Ghost Town are a fantastic option. Located just 45 minutes from the city, this area offers a mix of rugged natural beauty and Old West charm. The Superstition Mountains themselves are an iconic backdrop and are steeped in mystery, thanks to legends like the Lost Dutchman’s Gold Mine. You can take a hike along one of the many trails, such as the popular Peralta Trail, or simply drive up the Apache Trail Scenic Byway for incredible views of the desert landscape.

After you’ve worked up an appetite from hiking or exploring, stop by Goldfield Ghost Town for a taste of the Wild West. This reconstructed ghost town offers a peek into Arizona’s mining history, with old-timey saloons, a narrow-gauge railroad, and even a gold-panning experience. It’s a fun place for families or anyone who enjoys a little bit of Arizona history mixed with some kitschy fun. The whole area offers a nice blend of outdoor adventure and historical charm, and it's close enough that you can make a day of it without feeling rushed.

No matter what you’re in the mood for, these day trips offer something different from the usual Phoenix scenery. Each destination is an easy drive from the Valley, making it easy to get out of town, even if it’s just for a day. You'll be amazed at how much variety Arizona has to offer just beyond the city.
