5 Suggestions For The Upcoming Move

Preparing to move into your new home can be a daunting and stressful task. It's easy to get distracted while looking at old photo albums or when you find items you thought were lost forever. Time is never on your side, and it might feel like you are always short a few pairs of hands. We have made a list of tips we hope will help you prepare for the move into your new home, while relieving stress and providing clarity.

1. Categorize

Marie Kondo, an expert in organization, suggests organizing your belongings by category instead of by room. Rather than moving from bedroom to garage, start by focusing on one specific type of item, like all your clothes. This will allow you to see everything you have at once and help you know exactly what you are dealing with. Then move on to toys, books, or any other categories.

2. Keeping What Is Strictly Necessary

As soon as you know you are moving, start decluttering. It is important to purge your home of everything you do not need before packing. Not only will this make packing easier, but you will avoid crowding your new home and there will be less to move.

Be brutally honest with yourself and your stuff. Those broken things won’t get repaired. If you're not already using it, you probably never will. Forgot you even had that thing? Throw it out or donate it. Keep in mind that not everything needs to be trashed. Separate the nicer items to either donate or sell.

3. Label

Make sure your labels are accurate and specific. It’s important to know exactly where your items are and need to go to make unpacking easier once you’ve arrived at your new home. Keep in mind that most boxes are stacked on top of each other, so be sure to label things on the side of the boxes.

4. Use the Right Box

Over-filling moving boxes is a common mistake - making boxes too heavy or more likely to break. If you can, pack heavier things into the smaller boxes and lighter things in the larger boxes to avoid weighing a box down. Try to keep boxes somewhat uniform in size. Having only three different box sizes instead of random leftover boxes will make loading the truck simpler while maximizing the space inside the moving truck.

5. Know What Not to Pack

Even though large furniture and appliances will not fit in boxes, it is still important to protect them with covers and pads. Make sure you keep valuables and important documents with you during the move to avoid the risk of losing them. There are also things that can’t be packed. Items commonly found in garages like paint, lighter fluid, matches, or other things found on this list, are things that movers will not move.

Remember the best moving practices are based on organization and time management. Get a head start on the preparation and follow a proper moving schedule. There are tons of services and apps out there to help you out. The prospect of moving may feel overwhelming but following these helpful tips will make moving easier and help you enjoy your new home!
